Apresentação de Alcides Murtinheira (Instituto Camões): Cante Alentejano
O cante constitui uma das formas mais originais da música popular portuguesa. Exemplo de canto polifónico, geralmente interpretado por trabalhadores rurais e sem recurso a instrumentos musicais, tornou-se emblemático da região portuguesa do Baixo Alentejo, passando de geração em geração.
No dia consagrado à língua portuguesa, 5 de maio, dedicaremos a nossa atenção a esta forma popular de cantar a natureza, as relações humanas, o trabalho e a religião, que a UNESCO fez integrar, em 2014, na sua lista de Património Imaterial da Humanidade.
Antecedendo o documentário Alentejo, Alentejo, do realizador Sérgio Trefaut, procurar-se-á traçar um breve panorama histórico deste género musical, um dos últimos exemplos dos chamados cantos de trabalho, neste momento vivendo uma fase de salvaguarda e rejuvenescimento.
Formado em Filologia Germânica pela Universidade de Lisboa, em 1980, foi professor de Inglês e Alemão e orientador de estágio em diversas escolas secundárias portuguesas. A partir de 1991 esteve ao serviço do Instituto Camões (Instituto da Cooperação e Língua) como leitor de língua portuguesa no University College Dublin, Irlanda, e nas universidades de Colónia e Hamburgo, Alemanha. É atualmente responsável pelo Centro de Língua Portuguesa na Universidade de Viena, Áustria, e leitor de Português na Universidade Comenius de Bratislava, Eslováquia,.É autor de vários artigos sobre aspetos das culturas lusófonas e coautor de uma História do Cinema Português, publicada em alemão, em 2011. Trabalha pontualmente como tradutor.
Filme Português: Alentejo, Alentejo (de Sérgio Trefaut 2014)
De origem popular, o "cante" alentejano sobrevive graças aos grupos que o cultivam no Alentejo e na periferia de Lisboa, os quais recapitulam em ensaio o repertório conhecido de memória, quase sem registo escrito ou sonoro e com reduzidas alterações criativas. No Alentejo, dezenas de grupos amadores reúnem-se regularmente para ensaiar antigos cantos polifónicos e para improvisar cantos sobre o tempo presente. Nascido nas tabernas e nos campos, cantado por camponeses e por mineiros, o cante alentejano deixou os campos e atravessou as fronteiras da sua região. Nas últimas décadas, com a diáspora alentejana, apareceram novos grupos na periferia industrial de Lisboa e em diversos países de emigração, acentuando o cante como traço identitário dos alentejanos onde quer que estejam. "Cante" is one of the most original forms of Portuguese popular music. Example of polyphonic singing, generally interpreted by rural workers and without the use of musical instruments, became emblematic of the Portuguese region of the Baixo Alentejo, passing from generation to generation.
On the day dedicated to the Portuguese language, May 5, we will dedicate our attention to this popular way of singing nature, human relations, work and religion, which in 2014 UNESCO included in its list of Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Before the documentary Alentejo, Alentejo, by the director Sérgio Trefaut, we will try to draw a brief historical panorama of this musical genre, one of the last examples of the so-called work songs, at the moment living a phase of safeguard and rejuvenation.
Graduated in German Philology from the University of Lisbon in 1980, he was a professor of English and German and an internship adviser in several Portuguese secondary schools. From 1991 he was in the service of the Instituto Camões (Institute of Cooperation and Language) as a Portuguese language reader at University College Dublin, Ireland, and at the universities of Cologne and Hamburg, Germany. He is currently responsible for the Portuguese Language Center at the University of Vienna, Austria, and a Portuguese reader at the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. He is the author of several articles on aspects of lusophone cultures and co-author of a History of Portuguese Cinema, published in German , in 2011. He works on time as a translator.

Of popular origin, the music of Alentejo "cante" survives thanks to the groups that cultivate it in the Alentejo and the outskirts of Lisbon, which recapitulate in essay the well-known repertoire of memory, almost without written or sonorous record and with reduced creative changes. In the Alentejo, dozens of amateur groups meet regularly to rehearse old polyphonic songs and to improvise songs about the present time. Born in the taverns and in the fields, sung by peasants and miners, cante alentejano left the fields and crossed the borders of his region. In the last decades, with the Alentejo diaspora, new groups appeared in the industrial periphery of Lisbon and in several countries of emigration, accentuating the cante like identity trait of the people of Alentejo wherever they are. This film is a journey through contemporary Portugal, through a unique musical way and its interpreters. (source: mag.sapo.pt)
